Netflix has just dropped a new show that many people may have forgotten was in development, a Devil May Cry animated series based on the famed Capcom characters. The eight episode series has landed at #3 on the service instantly, behind Gone Girls and Love on the Spectrum, but ahead of new medical drama Pulse and massive hit Adolescence.

 

Netflix has a generally very solid history with its video game adaptations, so does Devil May Cry fall into that camp, or is it a rare disaster? Here are some comparison points:

 

l  Cyberpunk: Edgerunners – 100% critic score, 95% audience score

l  Arcane – 100% critic score, 87% audience score

l  The Witcher: Nighmare of the Wolf (movie) – 100% critic score, 83% audience score

l  Castlevania: Nocturne – 98% critic score, 69% audience score

l  Castlevania – 94% critic score, 90% audience score

l  Devil May Cry – 92% critic score, 80% audience score

l  Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft – 73% critic score, 33% audience score

l  DOTA: Dragon’s Blood – 69% critic score, 85% audience score

l  The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep (Movie) – 58% critic score, 39% audience score

l  Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness – 55% critic score, 41% audience score

 

So that’s…quite good! We have seen a lot of really, really great video game adaptations from Netflix so it may be behind quite a few, but above 90% should still be considered stellar. 

 

 

 

 

 

Having seen at least the first few episodes of the series, I can attest to the fact that yeah, it’s solid enough. A good representation of the series with admittedly some lore changes, but also accessible for newcomers as it lays out the “science” of its demons and the world they occupy clearly early on.

 

Devil May Cry is not listed as a miniseries, so if it performs well, it may be greenlit for more seasons. That seems likely already. Placing at #3 immediately is a great start and all we have to do is look at that list to see how prone Netflix is to renewing these series. Every show on that list has gotten multiple seasons minus Infinite Darkness. Also Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, but that was meant to be a miniseries and another animated series (plus a live-action series) are in development at present. So that still counts. I would be stunned if they did not renew Devil May Cry, as it seems like a sure thing.

 

I’m looking forward to binging the rest of the series this weekend, but so far, so good.
